The partitioning of energy within the animal and the important
factors affecting this are outlined. A discussion of the main systems of
energy evaluation, their differences and limitations is followed by
brief mention of the methods used in deriving the requirements of
animals for energy. It is suggested that, in future, the advantages of
using metabolizable energy to describe the feed requirements of sheep
and cattle in New Zealand should be considered.
