The literature on rapid tests for mastitis is reviewed. The
results of a study of the relationships between the leukocyte count,
DNA concentration and the California mastitis test (CMT) reaction are
discussed. It is suggested that the CMT reaction for mastitis be based
on the objective estimation of viscosity and that the basis for the test
be the chemical determination of DNA in milk rather than the leukocyte
count.
