Science and Technology Communications Workshop

Application Form (MS Word Document)

The Royal Society of New Zealand is building a comprehensive network of effective science and technology communicators throughout New Zealand. As part of our commitment to this project, we are offering free 3-day training workshops at Auckland Stardome Observatory on 25-27 November 2002, Mass Communication and Journalism Department, University of Canterbury 3-5 February 2003, and Te Manawa, Palmerston North 17-19 February 2003.

These workshops are aimed at graduate students and emerging researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including science, technology, mathematics and social science. Upon completion, it is conditional that successful participants join the Royal Society's Communicators’ Programme, which will create opportunities for them to speak out in their local communities.

The 3-day course will include tips on dealing effectively with the media, handling interviews, writing in plain English, building a relationship with the audience, and will include sessions on polishing presentation skills with video feedback. The course is free to all participants and includes morning/afternoon teas and lunches, however successful applicants will need to cover travel and/or accommodation costs. Each course is limited to 15 participants.

The training providers are Jim Tully from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Canterbury, and Lee Wilkinson from Communicate Consultants Ltd in Wellington.

To apply, please complete an application form and send it in along with a short CV to the Royal Society of New Zealand. For an application form or further information, please contact Catherine at catherine.ibell@rsnz.org or phone (04) 470 5770.
